RYAN NIEMILLER – THE CRIPPLE THREAT OF COMEDY
Ryan Niemiller, the self-proclaimed “Cripple Threat of Comedy” made a multiple show appearance in the Armory at The MGM Casino in Springfield, Ma. Niemiller was a finalist in last season’s “America Got Talent” competition. Even though it seemed that Ryan had become an overnight sensation he has been honing his craft in hundreds of small towns and clubs throughout the country. His constant touring and abstruse gigs made him according to his words “Battle-tested”.
This was my wife, Jenn, and I’s first adventure to the ROAR! comedy club in the Armory. It was a ideal venue to see a comedy show. It was separated from the main casino by a small courtyard and the structure itself reminded me of a small castle. The ambiance was sublime and the staging and acoustics were quintessential. With its 250 capacity, the Armory can host major comedic talent and still maintain a laid back atmosphere. There were two drink stations and the ability to purchase snacks. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The whole design was definitely well thought out.
Emcee Jonathan Tilson is a Boston native and has performed in clubs throughout the North East. Tilson’s delivery was sharp and refreshing. His riffs were topical and funny especially his bits on Applebee’s and his nephew “Walter”. His easy banter made him a superb host.
Opening act Al Park is also no stranger to the paying his dues. Another Boston comic who has been touring extensively. He has won both the Boston and Cleveland Comedy Festivals and was a finalist in the prestigious Seattle International Comedy Competition. He was also named Boston’s Best Comedian by the Improper Bostonian Magazine.
I could see what all fuss was about. Park was a consummate entertainer. His act was personal and quite hysterical. His bit on his goatee and antidepressant use hit the mark. His rapport with the audience was perfect. He easily pulled the crowd right into his crazed world.
Park will be a major comedy force in the very near future.
As I mentioned before Ryan Niemiller came to national attention last year during his AGT stint. Ryan is a comedian who is disabled in both arms but he doesn’t use his disability as a crutch. He uses his platform to prove to the world his handicap is a badge of honor. He has coined himself “The Cripple Threat’
His routine occasionally made the audience a bit uncomfortable but being the comedian that he is quickly flipped the awkwardness to his advantage and soon everyone was laughing. His masturbation and fingerprint bits were hilarious. His topics also ranged from his travels and his AGT appearances. At one point he fended questions from the fans about AGT. It was a great bonding moment as you felt close to Niemiller.
Niemiller show was top notched. I think everyone belly laughed and got Ryan‘s message. Screw disabilities. The man was funny as hell and a must see. Catch him next time he comes around. You won’t be disappointed. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a Netflix special real soon.
