SAGE KING – EP REVIEW & INTERVIEW

Sage King is a young man from Ct. whose spent his whole life in the midst of music. At age 9 he picked up the guitar and by 10 he was writing his own compositions. Now in his early twenties, he has released several noteworthy EPs and singles. His newest EP is the fabulous Blossom. All five songs on the disc are strong, melodic and full of fire. Sage King‘s vocal range is amazing and his songwriting is positively divine.

He credits such influences as Chris Cornell and Jeff Buckley as inspiration for his musical development. Even though he is young, he has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Aaron Lewis, Hinder and Drowning Pool. In addition, Sage King performs with his accomplished band, Sage King and Company, which has the tendency to tear the house down. Amp caught the ensemble when they opened for the illustrious King Kuel at the Hungry Tiger in Manchester which served as the Blossom release party.

Blossom is a masterful release. All five songs showcases Sage King’s monstrous voice. Besides that, all the tracks exhibit a masterful maturity and deliver powerful hooks. The EP opens with the lofty “My Own Damn Heart”. The chorus on the song is gorgeous and the constant tempo changes are adventurous. King‘s vocals are smoothly emotive and profound. The ballad, “Break Me Down” is plainly fierce. Sage King‘s voice is edgy with dynamic fury. The rocker “Love Illusion” is brazen and the incendiary vocals have spicy textures. The disc ends with the beautifully lush “Burning Room” and the impassioned “Blind Faith”.

Sage King was kind enough to answer a few questions for AMP about his music and future.

AMP: Tell the AMP audience a little about yourself and Sage King and Company?

SAGE: We are an alternative rock band out of Hartford, Ct. I grew up in Enfield and cut my teeth playing solo acoustic gigs in probably every bar, pub and restaurant in the area. The latest lineup of my band features Nathan Paul on drums, Josh Romanowski on bass and Austin Hills on guitar.

AMP: When did you realize you wanted to be a musician?

SAGE: Music was always on when I was growing up. It was a clear obsession even as a young kid. I always wanted to be a songwriter because I loved melodies and the art of writing lyrics. I was in a few different garage bands throughout my school years and I kept with it. There was no alternate path for me. There’s not one thing that makes as much sense to me as a guitar on my shoulder and a microphone against my lips.

AMP: Your songs are extremely strong. Give us a glimpse of your songwriting process?

SAGE: My songs are almost always started on the acoustic guitar. For me, it needs to feel right with just the barebones before you start adding everything in. From there, a simple chord progression and a single line is all I need to get something going. Not everything stick however, hence the stacks of paper that’s become a wasteland of forgotten ideas I keep around for some reason.

AMP: How excited are you about your new EP?

SAGE: I’m so very proud of how the record turned out. It’s a huge evolution from my last one. I’ve always been a diverse writer and you get all that in my music. You get the hard rocking tunes as well as the acoustic ballads. It’s just all over the map, but I like it that way. That’s how I listen to music.

AMP: If you can have your fans remember you for one thing, what would it be?

SAGE: My honesty. I really hope that comes out in my songs. People can tell when what your saying and playing is not genuine.

AMP: What’s the future like for Sage King?

SAGE: I hope bright lol. We’re always trying to push the envelope and I want to give our fans the best show we can. We’re already working on new music for the next release too. One thing I would really love to do that I haven’t had the opportunity to do yet is make a music video for one of the songs. New merch designs are always fun as well. I just wanna keep this train going for as long as I can because it certainly gets harder with age. We’re still just young guys, so I’m certain we’re not going away anytime soon!

Amp would like to thank Sage King for his time and energy. Please check out the music and definitely catch a show. The band is so potent live.
