STONY CREEK BREWERY
During a hosting of a Closer To Free charity event I asked Stony Creek Brewery‘s Tasting Room General Manager Norm MacDonald a simple question. What makes Stony Creek special? His answer fit well with the vibe in the taproom. MacDonald explained “It’s not only about making a great brew but also enhancing a lifestyle. Stony Creek strives to make aggressively laid-back beer”. And he was right. You could feel the “chill” factor as soon as you walked in.
Stony Creek has been in existence for approximately four years. The brainchild of the Crowley family, Stony Creek is already Connecticut’s second largest brewery. They produce a large variety of beers running the gamut from their top notch IPA Big Cranky to their wonderful Stout No Egrets. The Crowleys spared no expense in constructing their stunning tasting room nestled in the Branford harbor. The two story building with a large outdoor deck butts a marina and lovely views of the Long Island sound.
I wondered what kind of reaction MacDonald and Chloe (one of the many friendly bar staff) saw from first time visitors. They both agreed it was usually one of amazement. MacDonald commented that many breweries intentionally go for an industrial feel. He said “Stony Creek goes for an inviting earthy ambiance. We want people to feel comfortable and spiritually at ease”.
He also mentioned that the brewery works hard to have a positive community outreach. They sponsor Yale New Haven Hospital’s Closer To Free bike ride and Branford‘s fire works and public television station among other worthy charities and organizations. They have also partnered with Denali to host thirty person hikes. All part of their aggressively laid-back campaign.
Stony Creek is installing a concert series this summer. Last year they promoted a Twiddle concert with much success. This year Stony Creek is expanding the series to four shows. You know AMP will be there. Music and beer make the perfect combo.
The Stony Creek distribution chain has gotten wider. So not only do they distribute to the entire New England area but are also diving into the New York arena especially Long Island. Plus there is even newer growth for the brewery. Stony Creek has a new satellite location located right in the Foxwoods casino. Not just a taproom but a smaller scale full brew facility with their own signature beers. One of the new Foxwoods beers is Lean and Mean, a full flavored 99 calorie offering.
Stony Creek is definitely a destination that any beer lover must experience. The brews and amazing atmosphere are both superb. I commend the Crowleys and the entire staff at Stony Creek for the gem they have crafted in Branford.
