TAKING BACK SUNDAY LIVE AT THE DOME IN THE OAKDALE THEATER
By Joe Perusse
Taking Back Sunday @ The Dome 8/13/24 with Citizen for direct support.
Tuesday night was my 4th time seeing Taking Back Sunday and I still don’t know any of the words to sing along which is probably an advantage to the people standing by me. The best part of seeing the band live is getting to spend time with my good friend Christian who has gotten married and moved to Philadelphia, but remains Taking Back Sunday’s number one fan. It has been a minute since we’ve hung out so it was great catching up.
The nice thing about a Taking Back Sunday show is you do not need to know the words to have a great night of music. They are always energetic and the crowd is amped throughout the set as well. This night was no exception.
Leading the night off was “S’Old” and “Set Phasers to Stun”. Lead vocalist Adam Lazzara explained the large lit up 152 behind him was for the newest album the band was promoting. The number is the exit on the North Carolina highway that the group used to get off of for band practice during their beginnings. During “What It Feel Like to Be a Ghost?” Lazzara was whipping the corded mic all over the place. Christian informed me he was saw him break his nose with it at a show. Now I had to keep an eye out for that. No broken nose but there did seem to be an almost choking issue around his neck at one point.
“A Decade Under the Influence” was followed by “Amphetamine Smiles” and a big roar from the crowd when Lazzara announced they were from Massapequa. “You Know How I Do” and “Error:Operator” were next. John Nolan ( Lead Guitar) took over main vocals for “The One”. Touring guitarist Nathan Cogan ripped into a sizzling solo on “Liar(It Takes One to Know One). “Lightbringer” followed and the the crowds singing voices came out for “You’re So Last Summer”.
Lazzara brought out the harmonica and Logan jumped on the keys for “Divine Intervention” Shaun Cooper (Bass) and Mitch Register(Drums) who is filling in for Mark O’Connell got to take a break for this one. “Tidal Wave”, “The Stranger”,”My Blue Heaven” and not one but two Happy Birthday songs preceded band Intros and “You Can’t Look Back”. After “Keep Going” and “Flicker, Fade”
Lazzara explained that they stopped doing the make believe we are leaving and then coming back for an encore thing so they could just play more songs. The crowd enjoyed that piece of information and really kicked it up a notch as the band ended with “Cute Without the ‘E’(Cut From the Team)” and “MakeDamnSure”. Christian said out of the 50 or so times he’s seen them it was about in the middle. Lazzara’s voice did seem a little strained as the tour is winding down. For me it was top 5. Christian is going again in Philly this weekend with his wife. I hope he gets a top 5.
Citizen opened the night and I was impressed. They had amazing energy, and a good light show for an opener. The crowd had circle pits going, crowd surfing and was jumping up and down. If you see them playing near you I recommend catching their show.
