TELLING SECRETS – SECRET LIES – SINGLE REVIEW
Telling Secrets is a gutsy hard hitting alt rock quartet based in the U.K.. Their debut single, “Secret Lies” is a hi-energy composition featuring driving rhythms and emotional vocals. The band is solely engineered by the audacious Vik Kovacs whose songs tell stories of blinding passion and temptation leading to corruption. Besides Kovacs, Telling Secrets is comprised of Augustus William Clark (Bass), Lewis Wheeler (Guitar) and Matteo Tondotonati (Drums).
Kovacs hails from District VII in Budapest. He graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. After university, he wanted his songs to inspire a community of people disoriented by modernity. Additionally, Kovacs felt his music was a reflection of his difficult and complicated upbringing.
Telling Secrets‘ sound is adventurous and dicey. On “Secret Lies”, the guitars are thrashy with a real gnarly flair, almost punkish. The bass is ruthless while the drums glisten with potent energy. Kovacs’ vocals are fearless with an undaunted voracity. The aggressive tempo is merciless and totally caries the song.
The song’s lyrics chronicles the paranoia created by the stress of lockdown. Everyone is feeling cornered and stuck. Telling Secrets‘ tale is one of loneliness and isolation.
Are we trapped? Are we free?
We don’t know what we’re meant to be
Minute by minute the future fades
Hoping tomorrow’s better than today
And we’re losing our focus
Missing the signs
We are nothing but the undefined
Our hearts are locked with the truth inside
Telling Secrets is leading the discussion on the harmful effects of depression and mental health. They are signaling to the world that the new normal is difficult. Yet, similar to Badflowers’ “Ghost”, maybe there’s hope just by the conversation.
In the studio, Kovacs enlisted the aid of Slaves’ vocalist Matt McAndrew who guided him to kick start the project. Also Slaves’ drummer, Zack Baker assisted with drums and mixing.
“Secret Lies” is a memorable beginning for Telling Secrets. Looking forward to what’s next.
