TEN TON MOJO – KARMALITA – SINGLE REVIEW
Ten Ton Mojo just released a dynamic new single entitled “Karmalita” and the world should be ready to party. This five piece boogie infused ensemble based in Brooklyn is laying down some scorching guitar riffs, driving backbeats and rarified vocals. Ten Ton Mojo is comprised of Dave Anthony (Lead Vocals), Scott Lano (Guitar), Christian Realmuto (Guitar), Chris Laubis (Bass/Vocals) and Paul Kane (Drums/Vocals).
Ten Ton Mojo‘s sound is pulverizing Southern rock with a new age twist, Drawing strength from their influences, they use vibrant hip shaking rhythms and edgy street wise guitars to create memorable hard rock anthems.
“The band started to embrace our roots and to give back to the fans who’ve been wanting this…and we’re always determined to do it our way “.
—Lead vocalist Dave Anthony
Think Black Crowes mashed with Blacktop Mojo with a dash of Guns N’ Roses.
They dropped their first full length, Ten Ton Mojo, in 2012. In 2016, the band let go a hard hitting single, “American Honey”. This year, Ten Ton Mojo popped out two other singles. “Stop Getting Off” has a monstrous groove with dramatic vocals. “Freedom Baby” hits you like a steamroller. The tenacious guitar solo merged with the aggressive bass line and hammering percussions is plain gnarly. The track is pure adrenaline.
“Karmalita” is Ten Ton Mojo‘s most compelling composition to date. The groove is killer. The guitars roar and Laubis’ bass explodes like a detonated grenade. Kane’s drums are full of tension filled vigor. Anthony’s vocals are perfect. He carries an intense timbre with a funky resonance. Gravelly and addictive, his voice is fiercely gallant. “Karmalita” cranks.
Christian Realmuto from Ten Ton Mojo was kind enough to answer a few questions about the band.
AMP: Can you give the AMP readers a brief history on the band?
CR: So the band was started in 2010. We spent about a year in the studio writing tunes before we jumped out into the gig circuit. Our first CD was recorded in 2011 and released in 2012. Since then we’ve been opening for national acts locally. We’ve been out to LA and played the Viper room. We just released our new single “Karmalita” and are proud to announce we are signed to Curtain Call Records.
AMP: Ten Ton Mojo has a strong bluesy Southern rock vibe. How has Brooklyn and N.Y.C. in general taken to the band?
CR: Well we’re all New Yorkers but our music influences have a wide range. It’s mostly a classic rock thing. We think of ourselves as new classic rock. The southern influence is hard to explain being a bunch of New Yorkers but somehow it just came out that way. We’re big fans of The Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot, southern rock bands that we admire. Somehow It just got integrated into our sound
AMP: You’ve released three powerful singles this year. How were they received?
CR: The singles have been great. We’ve gotten great feedback and great reviews. It’s really starting to expand our fan base outside of New York City. Next one drops in January and we’re just gonna keep it rolling from there
AMP: How does Ten Ton Mojo handle the songwriting process?
CR: It usually starts with a riff or idea by one guy. It’s then brought in to the band and we kind of work it out in the studio. Next we try it live to see what kind of response we get. We’re constantly thinking of ideas and constantly trying to stay creative.
AMP: Who influenced the band the most?
CR: It’s hard to say whos influenced the band the most if you think about your classic rock. Everything from the Allman Brothers to Led Zeppelin has had a profound impact on this band. Especially in the the way we play guitars, the way Dave sings and the way Paul plays drums. Not to mention it totally influences the way we dress. It’s totally our style. What can I say!
AMP: Ten Ton Mojo has supported some heavy hitters. Favorite gig to date?
CR: I love the time we got to play with Scott Weiland. We are all such big fans. It was great to meet him and it was an honor to open the show for him. He will be missed.
AMP: Any plans for an extended tour and if you could open for any present band, who would it be?
CR: Although nothing is booked yet we’re looking to hit the road in spring of 2022.
We would love to open for Greta van fleet or Rival Sons or any type of classic rock sounding band that fits our style. We also can’t wait to get up at some of these festivals in the spring and summer next year.
AMP: What does the future look like for Ten Ton Mojo?
CR: Well I think the future looks bright. One more single in January 2022 and then we’re going to do an EP in the spring right before we hit the road and turn everybody on to some new stuff. It’s gonna be a blast!
AMP: Favorite dive bar?
CR: My favorite bar is 7B on the corner of seventh Street and Avenue B. Great bar, great jukebox and Pinball. If you’re ever in the neighborhood stop by. You never know, there might be some Ten Ton Mojos in there.
