TENACIOUS D – LIVE AT THE HHC AMPHITHEATER

On Wednesday Tenacious D came to Bridgeport for a night of music and fun. Not really knowing what to expect heading to the show, I assumed the lead singer/acoustic guitar duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass would make me laugh. Between the music and the comedy, they did not disappoint.

Tenacious D entered to a roaring crowd ready to have some fun. Black held up a crystal ball for “JB JR Rap”. “Woman Time” and “Save the World” followed and then an already very sweat soaked Black stopped for a drink, telling the crowd it was time to wet his whistle. After “Post-Apocalypto Theme (Reprise)”, he commented how lucky Bridgeport was that The D was rocking hard right out of the gate.

Put the needle in the red. He was not wrong as the crowd was up out of their seats singing along to every song. “Low Hangin’ Fruit” and “Jailbreak”, (Thin Lizzy cover) had Black taking a short break as Gass took over vocals for the latter as Black first reclined in a chair and then just lay on the stage. Although it was all part of the act I’m pretty sure he could use the rest at this point as he is a nonstop ball of energy.

Black jumped to his feet for “Rize of the Fenix” and then was presented with what appeared to be a toy plastic sax for “Sax-a-Boom”. The show was then halted as Black stated no rock until everyone dances. Once he was satisfied enough dancing happened, “Roadie” was dedicated to the best roadies in the business. He did introduce the 3 roadies who had been, should I say, waiting on him so far during the show.

After “Kickapoo” a roadie in a large metal robot costume danced on stage for “The Metal”. Gass and Black discussed a theory that guitarist John Konesky was possessed by Satan. Konesky then took over lead vocals for “Beelzeboss( The Final Showdown)”. Black and Gass then had a “secret” band meeting where Black complains he is being ignored. Gass quits the band and walks off stage. Black cries, moans oh no what have I done?, and sings “Dude (I Totally Miss You)”. Gass returns after the tribute, they hug and sing “Friendship” together. “Keilbasa”, “Wonderboy”, “Tribute” and “Double Team” closed out the main set.

Band intros/ solos happened during “Double Team”. Other touring members are John Spiker on bass and Scott Seiver, drums. Black also recognized the guys on the sound board and lights, even having the light guy do his own light solo. Black kept up his comedy persona singing “You’re The One That I Want” from Grease as his solo. “Baby” and “Fuck Her Gently” finished a great night of entertainment.

DJ Dog Pound opened the show. He did 45 minutes of comedy and songs often changing lyrics of songs or using clips as his punchlines. It was a fun opener and a great choice to lead into The D.
