THE GRAVEL PROJECT – MANY MILES AHEAD – ALBUM REVIEW
Boston’s The Gravel Project just let loose their impressive new full length entitled Many Miles Ahead. The band is no stranger to AMP as we have reviewed several of their previously released singles. The new album encompasses those particular tracks and adds a diverse group of songs that are dynamically charged with lush textures and exotic rhythms. The Gravel Project have an adventurous hybrid sound. Their music crosses many genres including jazz, funk, r&b and rock. Their unique musical inflections places them in an extraordinary space where intoxicating melodies mesh beautifully with silky flows and sublime cadences.
The Gravel Project is comprised of Andrew Gravel (Guitar/Vocals), Jordan Gravel (Hammond B3), Dave Fox (Drums) and Brandon Mayes (Percussions/Vocals). Newest member, renowned percussionist Eguie Castrillo (Tito Puente/Jennifer Lopez), unfortunately does not appear on the record. The Gravel Project have a storied reputation of brilliant live shows and Many Miles Ahead completely captures that magic.
The record opens with “No More Fire”. We described the tune as a “smoking hot concoction of sizzling funky blues”, and it’s the perfect song to open the release. It definitely has heat. It’s followed by the excellent “Big Deep Blue” which we also reviewed. Next up is the smooth r&b of “The One”. Andrew’s voice is silky and full of emotion. The guitar rings with lofty flavoring. Jordan’s organ adds a savory accent while the percussion duo of Fox and Mayes dispense a refined elegance. Ali McGuirk’s backing vocals are a wonderful touch.
The eerily rocking “Earth Mother” presents another side of The Gravel Project. Ethereal in feel, the band toggles between intrepid rock timbres and audacious jazz intonations. Andrew’s vocals are gutsy while Jordan’s organ reigns supreme. The entire song is a sonic storm of rich tonality.. “Facts and Fiction” is another track we previously reviewed. We stated: “the entire tune has a commanding cadence that flows like a speeding freight train”. “Saving Up My Love” brings in The Gravel Project‘s funkier slant. The groove laden track has a masterful arrangement and vibrant musicianship.
“By My Side” is a glowing mid-rocker with a lavish elegance. The vocals are heartfelt and Fox’s drums dispense a myriad of depth. The harder flourish and fearless guitar solo at the end casts an unexpected turn. The latin-infused “Cool Rain” is fun and quite danceable. Being Hispanic, I can feel my “salsa” moves rising up.
The Gravel Project inject three bonus tracks to Many Miles Ahead. “Jimi”, Funkanee” and “Brothers” are all spunky and brazen. Many Miles Ahead is an aural wonderland of pure enjoyment.
Other contributors to the album are John Aruda (Tenor Saxophone), Scott Aruda (Trumpet), Patino Vasquez (Vocals) and Jesse Humphrey (Vocals). It was recorded at Division Studios.and produced by Andrew Gravel with Matt Beaudoin and Pat Dicenso as co-producers.
