THE ROLLING STONES – LIVE IN PITTSBURG
Originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, I headed out to Pittsburgh on a Monday, October 4 for The Rolling Stones. What was a trip to see my oldest son Garrett and spend some time with him became 24 hours. We did get in lunch, a movie, dinner and The Stones so it was a productive 24 hours. I have seen the band a number of times, my younger son is named Jagger, and they never disappoint.
As an intro pictures and videos of Charlie Watts were played on the screens. A fitting start to a show honoring the man who kept the beat behind the band for 60 years. “Street Fighting Man” opened the show followed by “Let’s Spend The Night Together”. Mick Jagger then welcomed the crowd back to live music and was joined by guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood in a touching moment to remember Watts.
“Tumbling Dice”, “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “Troubles a’ Coming” led into the request song for the night from the internet voting. I was pleased when my choice “Angie” won for tonight’s show. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Living in a Ghost Town” led into “Start Me Up” which always seems to energize the crowd. Not that the fans needed much prodding as most people were up singing along the whole show.
“Honky Tonk Woman” was followed by band introductions. The current musicians playing on this tour include Chuck Leavell (Keyboards), Bernard Fowler (Percussion), Matt Clifford (Keyboards), Tim Reis (Saxophone), Karl Denson (Saxophone), Sasha Allen (Backing Vocals), Steve Jordan (Drums) and Darryl Jones (Bass). This might have been the first show Jones was introduced after Ronnie Wood. It seemed like Jagger forgot him and after Wood got his huge ovation, Mick laughed and introduced Jones.
Next Richards took his turn on vocals for two songs, “Before They Make Me Run” and “Slipping Away”. Not that the crowd doesn’t love Keith but this seems to be when a lot of the crowd make a bathroom run which is probably the same thing Jagger is doing. Jagger returned to the stage for “Miss You”, “Midnight Rambler”, and “Paint It Black”.
“Sympathy for the Devil” followed, which I always relate to the 1999 UConn NCAA Championship win. I was at the Hartford Civic Center that night. The Stones ended with the song and then the video board showed the last ten seconds of the title game as UConn beat Duke. “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” ended the main set. The band returned for “Gimmie Shelter” and “Satisfaction”. The Stones are aging well and my 29 year old son was impressed. Glad I had the chance to show another one of my kids a little slice of Rock and Roll Royalty.
