THE UNLIKELY CANDIDATES – LIVE
Thanks to radio station WMRQ-140.1, Bloomfield, and , Amp got to scope out two up and coming new artists. Both The Orphan The Poet and The Unlikely Candidates graced the Infinity stage with high energy performances.
Opening act The Orphan The Poet played an animated six song set which captured the attention of the audience. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio The Orphan The Poet consists of David Eselgroth (Lead Vocals), Jake Floyd (Bass) and Sam Floyd (Drums). One could feel the band’s intensity the moment they stepped on stage. They opened with “Money”, their big hit single from 2018. “Money” is an infectious pop tune with a catchy chorus. Eselgroth’s vocals were hot and his stage presence had juice. The next four songs were from the band’s current E.P., Queen Cobra, released in 2019. “All Messed Up” a robust indie song played well with the crowd. “Birthday” and “Headstone” continued the cool ambiance. The Orphan The Poet brought on the fire on “Queen Cobra”. Eselgroth was totally spirited and the bands musicianship was outstanding. They closed out with “Still Buzzin” a solid number that easily captured the house.
All in all, The Orphan The Poet offered a rousing live production and proved they are here to stay.
Headliners The Unlikely Candidates are a strong indie band out of Texas. Their current lineup is Kyle Morris (Vocals), Cole Male (Guitar), Kevin Goddard (Drums), Brenton Carney (Lead Guitar) and Jared Hombeek (Bass).
The Unlikely Candidates hit the spotlight running. Their live act was spontaneous and entertaining. Kyle Morris knows how to work the room. He was a dynamic front man flying from one end of the stage to the other. He remained a whirling dervish throughout the night. His buoyant demeanor was contagious as the crowd revved up. Carney’s guitar work was impressive and the rest of the band were quite noteworthy.

The opener “Oh My Dear Lord” off their 2018 E.P Danger To Myself set the accent for the evening. The moody and haunting song had a firm grip on their fans. Everyone was bopping their heads to the standout beat. “Best Things In Life Aren’t Free” a smooth pop song followed and the audience swayed to the laid back rhythm. All through their 17 song set, The Unlikely Candidates offered tenacious tunes. “Violence”, “Call My Name” and “Follow My Feet” were highlights. The band also executed a great rendition of “Celebrate”, a collaboration they recorded with The Dirty Heads.
The Unlikely Candidates finish was forceful. “Your Love Could Start A War”, a kick ass driving tune had the Infinity swaying. “Bells” drove the tempo further. And then the band whirled into their massive 2019 number “Novocaine”. This is when their devotees went into super drive. The song had a killer chorus and dynamic cadence.
After the show we meet both bands at their merch tables. They were all extremely friendly and amicable. Kyle Morris from The Unlikely Candidates and David Eselgroth from The Orphan The Poet were quite cordial.
It was a wonderful night of new music and experiences. Both bands gave their all and supplied a memorable time.
