THREE POINTS OF MADNESS – AN INTERVIEW

Three Points of Madness:

George Petrus – Vocals/Guitar

Ron Pacheco – Bass

Sean Daudelin – Drums

A heavy metal trio performing brilliantly-written original songs as well as carefully chosen covers around the tri-state area of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, Three Points of Madness (3PM) is my standard recommendation to my acquaintances who don’t typically love original bands. As my good friend Rob recently said: “people don’t know what they like, they like what they know”: there are plenty of music enthusiasts who prefer hearing the familiar songs played by cover or tribute bands. I’ve had the good fortune of seeing 3PM several times in R.I. clubs and had met bassist and lyricist Ron Pacheco at a mutual friend’s holiday party a few years ago. Pretty sure I complimented his 11-string bass and tried to book them for Rock ‘n Rhode Fest 2, but sadly 3PM was already booked.

I’ve been wanting to interview 3PM for week now, but the pandemic has not slowed them down much of all. On the contrary, they are currently working on their fourth CD. I appreciate that Ron and his bandmates, (front man/singer George Petrus and drummer Sean Daudelin) made time during one of their productive practices to answer a few questions for AMP.

KATEI’d like to start off by saying that if I hadn’t seen 3PM perform with my own eyes I never would believe you were a 3 piece band. Really impressive. No easy feat to sing complicated lyrics while playing guitar. Respect! So how long has 3PM been a band?

[RON]: Hi Kate. First off, we would like to thank you for this opportunity to be selected for an interview and for your very kind words, We have been at this for a long time, 7 years, and have always strived to give our best. We have taken the “do it yourself” approach, to be as independent as we can in bringing our music to the masses, hence why the band decided to be a trio. It keeps things simple, less schedules to have to work through, keeping it a very tight unit which is super focused.

KATE: That makes a lot of sense. Are you three the original members?

[GEORGE]: Ron and i are the original members. We always were in search of that missing key element to make us whole, a great drummer. Before we found our man and drummer extraordinaire, Sean, in 2014 we had a revolving door of players. It was like Spinal Tap, either they blew up, disappeared or got lost. LOL

KATE: Hahaha….. others were reduced to a globule on a drum stool or choked on someone else’s vomit. Sorry, you detoured me to a film I could quote all day. Back to your interview, without using the words “heavy metal” describe 3PM‘s music.

[RON]: 3PM‘s music combines the elements of Hard, Alternative, Progressive Rock and Metal under one umbrella, which appeals to a wide range of fans who enjoy those styles without alienating a specific listener or sticking to one genre. However, our musical style is concise, focused and not everywhere on the map. There is something in our catalogue for everyone and we feel that the well rounded sound that we have been able to create allows us to be more accessible to a wider range of listeners.

KATE: In no particular order, what are your top 5 favorite albums of all time?

[GEORGE]: Yes: Fragile, Guns N’ Roses: Appetite For Destruction, Metallica: Master of Puppets, AC/DC: Back in Black, Boston: Boston.

[RON]: Metallica: Ride The Lightning, Iron Maiden: Powerslave, Dream Treater: Awake, Napalm Death: Utopia Banished, Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

[SEAN]: Dream Theater: Liquid Trio Experiment 2, Tool: Scenes from a Memory, Rush: Lateralus, Porcupine Tree: Snakes & Arrows, Fear of a Blank Planet.

KATE: What is your inspiration for songwriting? Take me through your creative process.

[GEORGE]: Usually it starts from an idea or riff from either myself or Ron, and we build around that. Sean then adds his parts which weaves everything together while each making sure that our parts are branched out to stand on their own way while still creating a unified flow and form with great melodies, hooks, licks and grooves.

[SEAN]: If I were to add in a part to it, then perhaps when it comes to drums, I start from the perspective of trying to complement the guitar and bass, but I also don’t want to get into a rut. For each song, I look back on the other parts I’ve written recently and if my new parts are too similar, I’ll force myself to do something completely different. I’ll also try to change up each verse or chorus, building on the intensity each time through.

KATE: If a move were to made about 3PM, who would you want to play you?

[GEORGE]: Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Pepper’s front man)

[RON]: Bryon Cranston cause some friends said his character in Breaking Bad looked like me. LOL!

[SEAN]: Hugh Jackman

KATE: I’ve been told I’d make a decent stand-in for Melissa McCarthy. So, what’s next for 3PM?

[GEORGE]: We are getting ready to record our 4th full length album, working on getting back to playing live this spring, summer and fall and branching out our live performances beyond New England.

KATE: Fantastic! How can fans get their hands on your music?

[SEAN]: You can find our music through our social media links.
