THUNDERCAT/COCO & BREEZY – MGM MUSIC HALL
By Bailey Grullon
The night started strong with a duo DJ set by talented twin sisters known as Coco & Breezy. The energetic set included original house music and remixes of songs like Float by Janelle Monae which kept the packed audience in a bouncing state of movement and flow. In between songs, they shared their message of self love and the importance of loving one another, along with a reminder that whatever challenges or dark times we may be facing, there is a light at the end of every tunnel.
Coco & Breezy also shared how this tour is truly something special being rooted in a deep personal background and rich history of friendship. Coco, Breezy, and the headliner, Thundercat, have been friends for over 10 years. Before claiming his spot as a legend in mainstream media, the three would regularly get together to watch anime, and music was never really a part of that friendship until recently. This tour is the first time they have seen him perform, and Coco & Breezy could not have been a better choice to warm up the audience.

After blessing the crowd with warm colorful energy, the audience did not have to wait long for Thundercat himself to emerge from thick smoky clouds underneath a blow up giant panther-like cat. Thundercat was accompanied by a pianist using a synthesizer and a drummer on an intricate drum kit. This trio is the epitome of precision and speed, but they also showcase talents that will make your jaw drop.
Thundercat’s comfortability on guitar is proven with long but fast melodic lines that the crowd graced with the elite “guitar face” also known as a stamp of approval or a musical sign of respect. Thundercat was placed in the middle with synths to his right and the kit to his left.

What was unique about this set, is the drums and the synths were facing each other and Thundercat interacted with them regularly looking to make contact to issue cues without words. The night concluded with Thundercat playing some new songs sprinkled in with the classics. This trio is a reminder not only of how crisp and sharp these musicians are, but also a testament the bond and connection music creates. This show was magic and an absolute treasure to witness.
