TROY REDFERN – GHOSTS – SINGLE REVIEW
Troy Redfern, just released the second single off his forthcoming new album entitled The Fire Cosmic on Red 7 Records dropping August 6th. “Ghosts” is a bluesy Americana track full of dynamic slide guitar riffs and powerful vocals. Redfern adds an impressive country twang to his signature blues styling. The first single released was the driving “Waiting For Your Love” which delivered a masterful blues rhythm and propulsive vocals.
Redfern is considered one of Britain’s premier slide guitarists. The new album , The Fire Cosmic, follows five unprecedented albums that Troy has released in 2020. It was recorded at he legendary Rockfield Studios in North Wales. The same studio where Queen recorded all their early albums including A Night At The Opera. For the new album, he enlisted some of the best musicians in the U.K. including the legendary Darby Todd (The Darkness, Paul Gilbert) on drums and bass guitarist Dave Marks (Hans Zimmer). Guitarist Ron Thai (Guns N’ Roses, Asia) plays guitar on the song “On Fire”. Redfern described his contributors as “the ultimate dream team” on what is arguably the British guitarist’s most stellar release to date.
The forthcoming studio album is a culmination everything Troy has learnt so far on his musical journey. More importantly, it brings into sharp focus a much tighter songwriting and more visceral, muscular production style .For production duties Redfern enlisted the Brighton based producer, Paul “Win” Winstanley. “Win” is best known for his epic rock production style and the two had previously worked together. Redfern expounds on the recording by stating: “It was important for me to capture the raw energy of three guys playing live in the same place. That’s something that you just can’t get if you’re sending files from different locations, it doesn’t have the same vibe or feel if you do it that way“.
On “Ghosts”, Redfern builds an intensely passionate composition with organic guitar flourishes and astounding fills. His slide playing transmits lush textures and elevated tones. The song is upbeat even though the lyrics concentrate on love long lost. His vocals fit perfectly with the intrepid pulse of “Ghosts”. His voice has a gnarly resonance with a punchy timbre. “Ghosts” is an ideal example of Redfern‘s commitment to expand the boundaries of classic blues and ferry in a new blues renaissance.
The haunting “Ghosts” video takes you on a musical journey deep in the Wild West. The video captures the essence of the song’s vintage, Appalachian feel. Filmed at a rustic cabin on the banks of the river Wye in Hereford, Troy‘s performance encapsulates the sense of urgency and the striving for resolution that can be heard throughout his big sky cinematic skyscape.
