VICIOUS ROOSTER – AN IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW
VicIous Rooster is the alter ego of musician, producer and songwriter Juan Abella. Abella was born and raised in Argentina. In 2016, after his graduation from college and the end of a long term relationship, Abella decided to migrate to Los Angeles in order to further his musical education and career.
Vicious Rooster released his bold debut album, The Darkest Light, in 2017. The Darkest Light was a tour de force. Abella used the record as a release from the personal turmoil he had previously experienced. It was a beautiful cleansing.
Vicious Rooster recently released two impressive singles. Both, “The Moon is Dancing” and “Something Goin’ On” combine many different genres including Southern and classic rock. You can also hear hints of grunge and folk. A true melting pot of sound.
Vicious Rooster has been kind enough to answer a few questions about his music and worldly travels.
AMP: When did you decide to focus on your musical career?
VR: I guess 2016 was the year everything changed for me. Something inside me woke up and I understood I needed to follow my dreams. I had been writing songs for so long and I had just finished recording my first album, the Darkest Light. A couple of months later, everything started making sense.
AMP: You blend different genres to create your signature sound. Who influenced you the most?
VR: I think most of my compositions are heavily influenced by The Beatles, The Black Crowes, Alice In Chains, Led Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses and Supertramp. Specially on my first album. Vocally, I love the styles of Chris Cornell, Layne Staley and David Coverdale.
AMP: Your songs seem to reflect the chaotic world of today. Are they personal?
VR: Yes, they are. Most of my lyrics come from situations I had to deal with emotionally, although I’m not always the main voice. Sometimes, I try to write about those situations from a different point of view. I’m always trying to find the best way to express myself. I’m always looking for ways to connect with the audience.
AMP: You moved from Argentina to L.A. How did that effect your musical vision?
VR: When I moved to L.A., and after a few years living here, my views on the music business changed radically, whether because I studied about it or because of what I experienced first hand. Everything that crossed my mind when watching concert DVDs and music videos back in Argentina has changed completely.
AMP: You produce most of your music. Are there any producers you would be interested working with?
VR: Yes, totally. I grew up in the 90s and I love that sound. It would be a dream come true to have the chance to work with producers like Kevin Shirley, Marti Frederksen, Glen Ballard or Rick Rubin.
AMP: If you had a choice, where would you play your first gig after Covid?
VR: Oh, good question! I would love to play a release party with a full band for the two singles I released this year. It would at the Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood. I always wanted to play on that stage.
AMP: What’s next for Vicious Rooster?
VR: Right now, my priority is to continue promoting the latest single and to finish some songs I’ve been working on for some time. Expect more releases in 2021 and go check out the music video we did for our latest “Something Goin’ On”! You can find Vicious Rooster‘s music on every digital platform and YouTube.
