YOUNG THE GIANT
I apologize for my long absence. To be honest I experienced a bad case of writer’s block. It took an extraordinary band to awaken the fire. Seeing Young the Giant at New Haven’s College Street Music Hall and hearing their new release Home of the Strange (Fueled By Ramen) has definitely erased the vacuum. Home of the Strange is Young the Giant’s third release and by far their most polished. The production value is amped higher with accomplished producers Jeff Bhaskar (Kanye West, Bruno Mars) and Alex Saliban (Elle King) at the helm. A crisper production while retaining their indie rock roots. Throughout the album lead vocalist Sameer Gadhia uses his voice to seesaw between a multitude of genres. Indie, R&B, and Funk all mesh together with Sameer’s angst driven inflections. The opening track, “Amerika”, is an interesting play on politics. “Something to Believe In” (the first single) is a strong bid for arena anthem status. “Silvertongue” and “Nothings Over” are indie dance tracks that both work and broaden YTG’s spectrum. The real gems are the tunes that highlight Sameer’s yearning vocals with the band’s brilliant licks. “Elsewhere” and “Repeat” features R&B flavoring that suits the band well. “Titus Was Born” is a soft lullaby that transports the listener to the heavens. “Jungle Youth” funks up the album with guttural vocals and deep backbeats. The real diamond is “Art Exhibit”. It features beautiful vocals and quirky arrangements. In total each song on Home of the Strange is a powerful statement rivaling any of their past hits ( “My Body”, “Apartment”,”Cough Syrup”). Young the Giant have proven to be titans in a crowded indie rock universe.
