YOUR FRIEND JEBB – SINGLE REVIEW

Your Friend Jebb  is a new kind of animal created by the current pandemic. The group is the brainchild of songwriter/guitarist Jeremy Edmond and it’s billed as a online collaborative band. The current line up includes Edmond (Jebb), Owen Radford (Organ/Vocals), Tyler Green (Percussions) and Arthur Roberts of The Posies (Bass/Guitars). Your Friend Jebb has just debuted its first single, “Change of Seasons” with the flip side “Sound The Alarmed”. The band enlisted some talented help on both songs. Lisa Mychols (Vocals) and Tom Richards (Guitar/Drums) were brought in to bolster “Change of Seasons”. Roberts (Lead Guitar) and Terry Draper (Vocals) contributed to “Sound The Alarmed”.

The two songs are a precursor to a full length album entitled Cardboard Cutouts Variety Show which will have a story concept. The record follows a band’s major stages of being. It commences with the forming. Then travels through the height of its career and finally to the demise. An interesting approach for a initial release. The sound master for the single and the upcoming album is Tyler Green. The themed story line was created by Jebb and Owen Radford who have worked on similar projects. They have previously used comparable approaches on the albums, Beachy Weather and future by Jebb & the Riots. future recounts the tale of a forgotten town called Greenleaf and features the vocal talents of Ken Stringfellow (The Posies), Derrick Bostrom (Meat Puppets), Pete Donnelly (The Figgs) and Patrice-Zappa-Porter (Frank Zappa’s sister).

“Change of Season” is delightful song full of spiraling harmonies and melodies. The whole retro vibe of the tune brings back memories of Laurel Canyon. You definitely can feel the ghosts of The Byrds and The Mamas and the Papas. The single opens with a strumming guitar before the full band chimes in. Initially we hear Lisa Mychols lilting vocals before Jebb takes over. The jangly guitar and Radford’s organ are flawless. The back beat combination of Roberts and Richards perfectly fits the upbeat flow. The interchanging vocals between Mychols and Jebb are buoyant and rosy. It’s hard not to crack a smile while listening. The musicianship and production are first rate.

“Sound The Alarmed” is an interesting psychedelic piece. It has a real trippy aura with bare bone guitars and vocals. The minimalist guitar solos add an ideal punch. It has elements of spoken word and strong hallucinogenic overtones.  The harmonies are compelling and somewhat eerie  Your Friend Jebb is ambitiously flexing its creative mettle on “Sound The Alarmed”.

With its debut single, Your Friend Jebb has established itself as current and cutting edge. The band adroitly innovates new twists on vintage sounds. Looking forward to the new album.

Jeremy Edmond (Jebb) is associated with several other projects. The Sane Riot is a garage/jam band comprised of Jebb, Ezra (Drums) and Matt (Bass). The a fore mentioned Jebb & the Riots. and lastly Lonely Isle which is Jebb’s experimental side. Jebb is also a co-host of the podcast, Jebb and Green Cast, on Youtube.
