NUNZ – AN ARTIST SPOTLIGHT AND INTERVIEW

Lately I’ve been running into hard hitting rocker Nunz all around town, We caught him live when he opened for The Name Droppers a few months back at Small Batch Cellars. Most recently, I met him in the studio working with Vic Steffens on new material at the Horizon Recording Studio in West Haven. Nunz is the moniker of the dynamic Sal Annunziato whose been a mainstay in the CT blues/rock community.
Like I said, Nunz is already recording his next project. The songwriter is truly prolific as he just dropped a full length entitled Some Kind of Heaven, also recorded at Horizon with Steffens at the board. On Some Kind of Heaven, Nunz solicited some heavy weight studio musicians including Scott Spray ( The Name Droppers} and Crispin Cioe (Uptown Horns).
Some Kind of Heaven is a rock album that blends melodic hooks with tenacious guitar work and strong songwriting. All through its 11 tracks, the record shifts between hard-driving rock anthems and more reflective interludes. Songs like “Can’t Stop Rock n Roll,” “Darling Blue,” and the title track showcase the album’s balance of raw vitality and impressive guitar riffs. Some Kind of Heaven a release that definitely appeals to listeners who enjoy modern rock with classic influences and introspective storytelling.
Nunz was kind enough to sit for this interview.
AMP: How would you describe the “Nunz Sound” to someone who’s never heard you before?
NUNZ: For me it’s all about capturing the energy of each song. I want people to feel the emotions, thoughts, etc…
AMP: Your guitar sound has a distinct character. How do you go about finding the right tone for a song?
NUNZ: I write most of my songs on acoustic guitar and turn them over to a pro, I know the sound I’m looking for after conversations with Vic Steffens from Horizon.
AMP: What is the hardest emotion to honestly write about?
NUNZ: No doubt the hardest emotion to write about is loss.
AMP: How do you mesh blues, rock and roots influences without losing authenticity?
NUNZ: It’s important for me to stay true to each song, what I’m trying to say, and how I present it. Hopefully that comes through as being genuinely authentic.
AMP: Your newest album is Some Kind Of Heaven. Can you give us a little insight into the release?
NUNZ: I have lyrics and different writings in a duffle bag full of notebooks, some of them are over decades of life… Some Kind of Heaven was birthed from those past experiences,
AMP: What do you look for in the studio that you can’t always capture on stage?
NUNZ: Most of all feeling comfortable and at ease with the producer. Making sure that they understand what I’m trying to achieve. Working with Vic is a blessing. His knowledge and experience are second to none.
AMP: Is there a particular song that constantly surprises you with the audience’s reaction?
NUNZ: People love “Everyones Dead”. I wasn’t sure how that was going to come across! Lol!
AMP: If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
NUNZ: John Lennon! I don’t need too ex[plain why…
AMP: What does success mean to you now compared with when you first started making music?
NUNZ: Great question, when I was younger of course I would fantasize, about “making it”. Now it’s a matter of really feeling happy about being able to create and feeling alive as a result.
