Allison Rose was kind enough to sit with AMP for this exclusive interview.
AMP: Your songs feel extremely personal. Where do most of your ideas start – lyrics, melodies or real life moments?
ALLISON: My songs are almost always inspired by emotions associated with something I’ve experienced–hence how personal they feel. As far as composition, I might come up with a lyric line and develop something off of that; or sometimes I’ll just sit at an instrument and work out some chords and melodies and see if I have any lyrical ideas that could fit what I’ve come up with.
Most often, though, the songs are just sort of “given” to me and aside from refinement, easily flow. If I try to sit and say, “Ok, I’m going to write a song now”…that never seems to work out well. So I just wait for the songs to be sent to me. Which is why I don’t write that often!
AMP: Who are some artists or writers that have influenced your sound and storytelling?
ALLISON: I’m heavily influenced by lyrical songwriters, especially those in the Nashville scene–writers like Lori McKenna and Gretchen Peters. In my mind, I’m best friends with Sara Bareilles and Brandi Carlile. Also songwriters like Noah Gundersen, Stephen Wilson Jr., and Katie Pruitt. I grew up on 90’s country music and pop diva ballads, so you can’t take those out of the girl.
AMP: What themes do you find yourself returning to in your music?
ALLISON: It seems like I’m always coming back to death and loss. My EP “Monarch” was written in the couple of years after the death of my father. And I’ve written songs following the death of other people in my life as well–my grandmother, a friend, and a young friend of my daughter’s.
AMP: How does performing your songs live change your relationship with them?
ALLISON: Seeing how the songs connect with my audience is powerful. It means a lot when something deeply personal to me connects with someone else in a meaningful way and they share that with me. I also see themes of which songs tend to “land” with an audience vs others–a song I might love may not be an audience favorite and a song I may not think is all that impressive sometimes gets frequently requested, giving me a new appreciation for it.
Also, I’ve come back to songs and added them to my sets after years of not performing them, and have noticed the songs take on a whole new meaning than when I initially wrote them! Time is weird.
AMP: You are playing at the Bigger Beast Records / All Boats Rise Entertainment charity event, the 2nd Annual Paws & Listen, being held at The Guild in Pawtucket, RI on 4/25. How special is that cause to you?
ALLISON: Dogs are my favorite people, so I will support animal rescue as much as possible! And when I was invited to perform and help organize an event that combines two of my biggest loves–music and animals–how could I NOT be excited? This year’s rescue, Vintage Pet Rescue, is particularly special to me since they specialize in senior and medically complex dog rescue. I have volunteered and even adopted from them in the past; such a wonderful organization!
AMP: What challenges have you faced as an independent artist?
ALLISON: Balancing the business side of things (promotion, etc.) with protecting my creative energy. I decided long ago that I did not want to pursue performing as a job or full-time and simply want to create when and where and how I feel led. But in order for people to have access to my music, they need to know about it. It’s always a challenge.
AMP: Is there a lyric you’ve written that feels especially meaningful to you?
ALLISON: The entire song “Where Does a Prayer Go?” is to me, one of the most important songs I’ve ever written.
AMP: How has music shaped who you are outside of your career?
ALLISON: It’s how I express myself, and it’s therapy. Whether it’s writing or listening or performing, it’s always there. I’m a mental health counselor by day, and use music in sessions with my clients regularly as well.
AMP: What are you currently working on that excites you?
ALLISON: I’ve got a few songs I’d really like to get recorded, maybe as singles. One is close to finished! Otherwise I’ve kind of been laying low and putting my creative energy into house projects.
AMP: If you could tell your future self one thing about your career, what would it be?
ALLISON: You have something to say that people want to hear. So say it.
AMP: Dream venue to play?
ALLISON: The Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, MA. I’ve never even seen a show there, but it looks absolutely gorgeous in photos. It’s on my bucket list.
